For Surviving TranslatorsJAT BulletinMost lost or inaccessible, this was JAT's print publication when the group was more active in the real world.

by William Lise

Here lies a rare artefact of the JAT Bulletin, the long-defunct monthly publication of Japan Association of Translators. It was published for years but the move to cyberspace for virtually everything JAT does saw its demise and only a smattering of articles have been re-inputted and published by that organization on their rather disorganized website.

What you see (and can read if you click) here is a fortuitous copying of the printed JAT Bulletin for publication in the also defunct Language International. I downloaded this fairly recently, but do not retain the URL and can no longer find even this pdf.

Note that the article, written sometime between May, 1996 and early 1997, mentions:

  • monthly JAT meetings and
  • a monthly JAT newsletter,

providing evidence these activities were going on in JAT for well over a decade since its establishment in 1985. Where are the Bulletins and when is the next monthly meeting?

This was back when I was JAT President, and the articles talk about the effect on translation of the bubble bursting. It also mentions the upcoming IJET Conference to be held in Sheffield, UK, my presentation at which I maintained and upload. It is apparently available nowhere else, having gone missing along with large volumes of other JAT legacy content.

I retain none of my print issues, having discarded them with the expectation that they woud be scanned for publishing on the JAT website. That was extremely optimistic. They are gone forever, I am afraid.
