Slide rules were those wonderful analog calculating tools so popular before the appearance of the multifunction calculator at reasonable prices.
The slide rule culture of Japan was broader, deeper, and long-lasting than it was in places such as the US. It was formally taught in junior highschools and there were even nationally held skill certification exams.
